La mémoire du corps

Catherine Major

Following her debut with ATMA Classique as composer of Albertine en cinq temps ─ l’opéra (released in November 2022), Catherine Major begins her first collaboration with the new neoclassical label alisma, for the release of her very first instrumental album La mémoire du corps.

Made up of original compositions for piano, some of which are arranged for strings, English horn and wordless vocals, Catherine Major’s new opus abandons the words that usually nourish her songs, to offer an entirely instrumental album, revealing a new facet of her musical sensibility. “For the first time, I decided to silence the voice and the words to return to this foundation: the instrument,” confides Catherine Major. “The resulting music is imbued with my memories and recollections: they are intrinsically attached to my body.

While the head often makes a clean sweep of our memories, the body stores everything in its memory. The places, the people, the smells, the bursts of laughter as well as the holes in the heart.

A large space in the family home is dedicated to music, and it was in this Maison Foster studio that Catherine decided to let the body’s memory dictate these 15 new instrumental pieces.

It is with the forest, the mountains, the scent of herbs growing year-round in the greenhouse, the sound of the wind, the creaking floor, the birds, and the children that she has captured, through her piano, the defining moments of the first 40 years of her life. With this album, Catherine Major dives back into these pure and raw emotions—without embellishment, without a safety net—filled with both excitement and humility.
